MapMyShots is a simple Windows application that lets you see your photos on a world map. The app reads the GPS coordinates stored in your images' EXIF metadata - every photo taken with a smartphone over the past twenty years already contains this information - and places them on the map, letting you easily explore your photo collection by location. If you have photos scattered across different folders, this gives you a natural grouping in one place. And since you can also search the map by city or place name, it's very useful for checking whether you've already been somewhere, when, and instantly finding your photos from that trip.
Your photos stay in their original folders, nothing is modified, and above all, everything runs locally on your computer. MapMyShots extracts the coordinates and saves them in a local database on your own PC. The path of the database file is shown in plain text - you can verify it under Settings. If you want, you can also move the file to a different folder from that same menu. I'm proud of the fact that it requires no account, no subscription, and no cloud upload. Everything runs on your computer, and it's incredibly simple to use.
I developed this app in my spare time because I personally needed it: I had to visit some friends, and to make the most of the trip, I wanted to take my wife to see some new cities nearby - but I couldn't quite remember exactly where we'd already been over the years. So I started looking for an existing app, but most of the ones I found were packed with features I didn't care about, required accounts, subscriptions, cloud services, or complex systems with thousands of menus and settings scattered everywhere, with no logic or usability. Crazy... I only wanted an app that showed the photos from the folders I chose on a map, and that was it. And so I decided to write it myself in my spare time. When I finished it I thought... maybe it could be useful for someone else too? And that's how I created this website.
I've been writing software for nearly forty years. MapMyShots is not a startup, not a new commercial project, and it wasn't born with the goal of generating revenue. The app is so simple and basic that it wouldn't feel right to force users to create accounts, subscribe, or pay to unlock "premium" features. Maybe when it's been downloaded by 10 million people I might reconsider, but for now this is fine.
